An older Tzutujil Mayan woman in traditional dress demonstrates how to wind the tocoyal headdress around her head in the weekly open market in Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala. They are a symbol of status and authority for a woman .Twenty-five years ago, many women there wore them, but because they are so expensive now, most women cannot afford them any more anymore. It is a piece of woven fabric about 40 feet long which is wrapped around the head.
