An older Tzutujil Mayan woman in traditional dress, including the tocoyal headdress, in the weekly open market in Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala. Tocoyals are a symbol of status and authority for a woman. Twenty-five years ago, many women there wore them, but because they are so expensive now, most women cannot afford them any more anymore. It is a piece of woven fabric about 40 feet long which is wrapped around the head.
