The male Resplendent Quetzal, Pharomachrus mocinno, with its irridescent colors and long tail coverts is arguably the most spectacular bird in the Americas. It is a member of the trogon family and was the sacred bird of the Maya and the Aztecs in pre-Colombian Mesoamerica. It is the national bird of Guatemala, and the unit of currency there is called the 'quetzal.' It is native to high montane cloud forests from southeastern Mexico to western Panama.
